AN IDEA IS BORN

Prometheus began out of necessity. Companies lacked proper monitoring tools for today’s software stack so improvements and fixes were hard to craft. Two engineers at SoundCloud envision an open source monitoring system from scratch inspired by Google’s BorgMon.

SETTING THE STAGE

Overcoming doubts about the daunting task of building a monitoring system from scratch, a team of SoundCloud engineers begin work on a solution as a side project. This begins the building of Prometheus.

CATCHING FIRE

Prometheus jumps the shark and goes mainstream as an open source project with mass adoptions in 2016 and 2017, including by Ericsson, CoreOS, Red Hat, Google, Docker, Cloudflare, Deutsche Bahn, BNY Mellon, CERN, and The New York Times.
